OMPW Holds Inaugural Graduate Medical Education Workshop

Published on Friday, May 21, 2021

The Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce (OMPW) sponsored its’ inaugural Graduate Medical Education (GME) Workshop on May 7, 2021 at the Horne Event Center in Ridgeland, MS. The free, one-day event was designed to increase participants’ understanding of key issues in GME funding through a combination of information sessions, practical advice, and GME updates.

The workshop took on the challenge of addressing Graduate Medical Education (GME) finance. One might think that GME finance is a topic that would only interest the hospital finance department. That is a huge misconception. GME funding is a complicated and, many times, confusing subject but it touches every aspect of a residency, fellowship or other GME program.

One of the workshop’s goals was to engage everyone involved in hospital and program leadership and to show how it is important to approach finances as a team-based approach like other GME challenges. It is OMPW’s plan to develop and deliver an annual GME conference with future symposiums taking on multiple topics such as financial, academic, and accreditation challenges. The interest, engagement and attendance resonated the importance of GME Finance. It is the OMPW’s hope that this year’s workshop was a first step in shedding a little light on the GME funding process.

Held in collaboration with Laura Gillenwater, CPA, Horne LLP; Christopher Francazio, PKF Health; and Shatara Bogan, Mississippi Division of Medicaid; the conference provided a venue in which new and established GME leadership, faculty, staff, and leaders considering future entrance into GME development could gain valuable education and engage in important network opportunities.

The seminar covered a variety of subjects including understanding the purposes and processes involved in Medicare GME payments to hospitals, establishment of full-time equivalent (FTE) resident caps, Medicaid and state support, and possible new GME regulations that may emerge from the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021. Continuing Professional (CPE) Credits were available to CPA participants.
